Dutch Expat Buddy for Den Haag: Koningsdag on Tuesday 27 April 2027 with its illustration, followed by upcoming items — the tax return deadline, Remembrance Day, Liberation Day and holiday pay

What took me 4 years to figure out — in one calendar.

Moving to the Netherlands is exciting. The paperwork is not.

Belastingaangifte. Zorgverzekering switch deadlines. WOZ bezwaar. Eigen risico. Toeslagen you didn't know you were entitled to. Fines for things you didn't know were compulsory.

Most expats learn this stuff the hard way — by missing a deadline, paying a fine, or spending a year on the wrong health insurance plan. After four years of living in the Netherlands, I built the resource I wish I'd had on day one.

And 2027 is a year where it pays to be paying attention: the eigen risico rises for the first time since 2016, the 30% ruling becomes 27% for most newer expats, and the 1 May tax deadline falls on a Saturday. The calendar flags all of it.

What changes in 2027

€400Mandatory eigen risico — up from €385, the first rise since 2016.
27%The 30% expat ruling becomes 27% for rulings that started in 2024 or later.
Sat 1 MayThe tax return deadline falls on a Saturday — the calendar tells you to file by Friday 30 April.

What's inside

  • Tax: belastingaangifte, the uitstel deadline, WOZ objections and quarterly BTW for ZZP'ers.
  • Health insurance: eigen risico 2027, the 12 November premium announcement and the 31 December switch deadline.
  • Toeslagen: zorgtoeslag, huurtoeslag and kinderopvangtoeslag — when to check and update.
  • Residence & citizenship: permit renewal windows and naturalisation, including the proposed 5-to-10-year change.
  • Work & money: jaaropgave, vakantiegeld, pension review and the 27% / 30% ruling.
  • Home: WOZ value, energy contract renewal and mortgage review.
  • School & children: summer holidays for your region, daycare waiting lists, school open days and kinderbijslag.
  • Every holiday: public, Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Hindu and cultural days — what each means and whether you get the day off.
  • First Week Checklist: BSN, DigiD, bank, health insurance and huisarts, in the order you need them.

Who this is for

Expats who moved to the Netherlands for work and are still figuring out how the system works. International employees, knowledge migrants, trailing partners, ZZP'ers. Anyone who has ever googled "do I need to do anything about zorgverzekering" at 11pm in December.

This is not for refugees or asylum seekers — their administrative process is entirely different and not covered here.

What this is not

This is not legal or financial advice. It is a structured guide to help you know what exists, when it matters, and where to go next.

2027 figures are based on the Prinsjesdag 2026 budget and may still be finalised. Always verify deadlines directly via Belastingdienst.nl, IND.nl and your gemeente.
